Murray to Conclude More Than a Decade of Leadership

Stephen S. Murray H’54 ’55 ’63 ’65 ’16 P’16 ’21 will conclude his tenure as Lawrenceville’s 13th head of school on June 30, 2027, following more than a decade leading the School. He announced his decision on February 26.

Since his arrival in 2015, Murray has broadened the scope of experiential learning, overseeing the renovation and construction of Tsai Field House as a hub of campus life, and created a state-of-the-art design center and makerspace in the Gruss Center for Art and Design. He spearheaded the development of two strategic plans at Lawrenceville: Lawrenceville 20/20 in 2016, which paved the way for the most successful fundraising campaign in independent school history, and House, Harkness, Heart: A New Era for Community Wellbeing in 2021, which formalized the School’s commitment to helping students live healthy, balanced lives.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I extend sincere and deep gratitude to Steve for his steady leadership and the integrity with which he has served this institution, and to his wife, Sarah, for her unwavering support of the Lawrenceville community,” said board president Celeste M. Mellett ’94 P’27 ’30 in a letter to the School community. A committee of the Board of Trustees is partnering with Spencer Stuart, a global advisory search firm, to identify Lawrenceville’s 14th head of school. The committee is co-chaired by Benjamin Griswold ’99 P’28 ’30 and Alexandra Buckley Voris ’96.
