Seems Like Old Times
As the calendar turned to June, generations of Lawrentians, particularly from the classes of the 0s and 5s, returned to campus to celebrate their connections to each other at Alumni Reunion Weekend 2025.
More than a thousand Lawrentians from the past three quarters of a century and their guests and families returned to campus for Alumni Reunion Weekend in early June. Although many in attendance had not seen each other in years, the time seemed to melt away once the alums hit the dance floors, shared meals, and collapsed in laughter together.
The Big Red Food Truck Picnic and Festival made the Circle the place to be on Saturday afternoon on a weekend that was also highlighted by dinners for the classes of the 5s and 0s, the Grand March, the Alumni Awards presentation, a Big Red Farm Tour, and the opportunity for alums to tour their old Houses.
The Class of 1975 celebrated its 50th reunion, while twenty-two new honorary class memberships were conferred and the Alumni Association bestowed its prestigious Distinguished Alumnus Award upon Matthew Dominy ’65 for his longtime commitment and service to the School. The robust program also saw the Harkness Award presented to longtime Russian teacher Timothy Doyle ’69 H’79 ’99 ’09 P’99, and the Big Red Award given to Kevin Huang ’05 and Jay Ottinger. Lawrenceville also welcomed its newest alumni trustee, Ian Rice ’95, who joins Rajib Chanda ’93 as the latest additions to the board, under the leadership of newly appointed president Celeste Mellet ’94 P’27 and vice president Bob Zochowski ’82 P’13.

History Teacher, Golf Coach
- After undergraduate studies at Franklin & Marshall and Princeton and earning a master’s degree at Yale, Tim returned to Lawrenceville in 1975 to begin a 44-year teaching career in the History Department that shaped generations of Lawrentians.
- A scholar of Russian and East European studies, he also taught the Russian language, U.S. history, and economics, bringing a depth of knowledge, intellectual rigor, and unmistakable wit to each.
- A chair of the History Department, Tim was also an assistant head of Cleve and Woodhull Houses; and head of Thomas, Upper West, and Reynolds, often alongside wife Kathy Doyle P’99, who worked in the School library.
- Chaired the Students for on Coeducation Transition to Coeducation Committee in the 1980s and served as dean of students from 1999 to 2004, with several stints as head of the Fifth Form.
- Advised multiple student publications, supported various clubs, including the Radio Club and Herodotus, organized student trips to Russia, and led the varsity golf team for more than two decades.
- Before retiring in 2019, he exemplified the Harkness tradition buy directing students, including son Brian Doyle ’99, toward a greater understanding of history and language, mentorship in the House, and coaching them on the golf course.
Timothy Doyle ’69 H’79 ’99 ’09 P’99 accepted the Harkness Award from outgoing Alumni Association President Heather Elliott Hoover ’91 P’20 ’23 ’24 and Kris Schulte H’92 P’15.
